Bringing Learning to Life!

When Gagandeep Kaur of the Chanarthal Cluster in Bathinda District visited Government Primary School, Manak Khana, she observed that the teacher was struggling to engage students effectively. After speaking with the teacher, she realised that the lack of teaching-learning materials (TLM) was a major challenge and that the teacher was uncertain about how to create them.

Gagandeep discussing with the teacher

Determined to find a solution, Gagandeep collaborated with the school staff to gather basic supplies. Using cardboard, colours, and scissors, they created a variety of TLM, including cutouts of fruits, vegetables, animals, birds, shapes, and numbers in different colours and sizes. The process was simple, but the impact was significant.

These newly created materials immediately transformed the classroom experience. Colourful circular cutouts helped students recognise colours and understand size variations. Shape cutouts allowed them to arrange objects in ascending and descending order, making mathematical concepts more interactive. For example, a simple picture of an apple encouraged students to ask questions about its colour, size, and taste, fostering curiosity and better understanding.

The impact of this initiative was far-reaching. The teacher not only learned how to create TLM but also started using them effectively in daily lessons. Students became more engaged and interested in learning. Teachers from other clusters showed interest in learning these methods after seeing Gagan create TLM at GPS Manak Khanna.

Gagan, also led a session during the Weekly Learning Space of the Young Leaders of Bathinda district, promoting collaboration and idea-sharing among other Young Leaders.

This small yet powerful initiative has already shown success at the cluster level, with the potential for expansion across the district. By equipping teachers with simple, low-cost materials, this approach can revolutionize how children in government schools engage with their lessons, making learning more interactive, enjoyable, and meaningful.
