Kuldeep Kaur, Sarpanch, Village Chak Karma, District Rupnagar, Punjab

Nestled in the heart of Punjab, India, lies a quaint hamlet named Chak Karma. Within its confines stood the Chak Karma Government Primary School, an establishment attended by 64 students and managed by a single dedicated teacher. The School Management Committee (SMC) members were scarcely involved, and the panchayats remained oblivious to their roles in the school’s advancement.

In the midst of this scenario, Bhawna, a dynamic young leader, crossed paths with the Head Teacher and was informed of the challenges of this school. Recognizing the urgency, Bhawna initiated a thorough needs assessment and diligently engaged with the sarpanch to comprehend the village’s dynamics.

Bhawna’s engagement extended to dialogues with SMC members and parents, introducing them to the concept of the Gram Sikhiya Sabha. When the GSS was finally convened, the community found a platform to address a plethora of issues. This marked a remarkable milestone, the first instance of comprehensive community engagement for school development. In the midst of this transformative movement emerged, Ms. Kuldeep Kaur, the visionary Sarpanch of Chak Karma, emerged. An exemplary leader, she defied societal norms and embraced her responsibilities with fervor, inspiring those around her. One of the transformative outcomes was the notion proposed by Ms. Kuldeep Kaur — the establishment of a dedicated Student Management Committee, a dedicated body tasked with mobilizing resources to enhance the school environment, fostering a nurturing space for the students.

The community’s increasing ownership of the school’s progress was evident as they confronted the challenge of a solitary teacher. The community, headed by Ms. Kuldeep Kaur, reached out to the District Education Office and voiced their need for additional teaching staff. Ms. Kuldeep Kaur’s leadership continued to shine as she ensured follow-up meeting that motivated the SMC members to inspect mid-day meals and ensure student welfare.

Over time, Chak Karma’s story evolved into an emblem of community-driven development. This inspiring transformation was a product of the selfless endeavors of Bhawna, our Young Leader, the visionary Sarpanch Ms. Kuldeep Kaur, and the unwavering support of the community. Their collective efforts turned Chak Karma into an embodiment of unity and progress.
